Chapter 14
KELLEN
I took a bite of my sandwich then scooped a spoonful of mashed potatoes into my mouth. The saltiness of everything made me sigh with a kind of ecstasy Iâd never had for food before. I was only just starting my meal when the waitress arrived with a plate full of pasta for me.
âHungry?â She gave me a grin. I smiled back at her, not bothering to close my mouth while I chewed.
âYou could say thatâ¦â
âLet me know if you need anything else.â
âIâm sure I will.â
I moved my fork to my new plate and twirled the spaghetti around it. I slurped it up into my mouth and smacked my lips again. I was so focused on my food I forgot Zak was sitting right there in front of me. He was quiet though the smirk underneath his beard said more than any words could say.
âYouâve got a little sauce there.â He tapped the side of his mustache to indicate where Iâd made a mess. I finally took a chance to breathe and wiped my face clean.
âSorry. I just smelled the food and got carried away.â
âYou donât have to apologize for that.â His chuckle was hearty enough to know he meant it. âIâm not exactly the neatest eater in the world.â
âIâve seen you eat before. A few steaks are nothing compared to this. I feel like I could eat a whole cow. I guess this is how you must feel all the time, always needing to satisfy your hunger.â
âI donât think my appetite compares to a pregnant manâs but I can imagine what it feels like. I donât want you to stop yourself. Not for me. Not for anybody. If our baby is hungry, you give them every bite of food they want.â
âOur babyâ¦â I looked down and put my hand on my stomach.
I couldnât believe it. Itâd happened less than an hour ago. One moment we were just trying to get each other off. The next, weâre spending a late night in Tonyâs Diner trying to satisfy my appetite.
I smiled thinking about was next for me. âI talked to Joshua. I talked to Bryce. Iâve known dozens of men and women who went through it for themselves. It was always in the back of my mind. I knew I could get pregnant. All Omegas are taught to be careful around the ones they care about because your heat comes when you least expect it.â
âIâd say the back alley of a bar is pretty unexpected.â
âNo kidding. I still canât believe it though.â
âYouâre not upset, are you?â
âUpset?â I scrunched my face in confusion. âIâm not that old but Iâm old enough to understand what this means. You and I were meant to be with each other. This was the next step I wanted to take with you. You can never plan these things.â
âIt almost seems like you did, inviting me to a bar away from everybody else, a special night alone. The sex alone wouldâve been good enough.â
If I were any other man, I wouldâve blushed at his comment.
